Success at the Textile Institute Awards 2011

In October 2011 I was a successful entrant in the

Textile Institute's (TISA) Fashion Design Awards for both my Mens and Womenswear.

I was lucky enough to walk away with the grand prize of the event, which includes four weeks tuition and accommodation at The Paris American Academy (PAA) in Paris.

I was also awarded the Audience Choice Award and an internship with Maggie T in Melbourne.

'The TISA Awards Showcase presented over 12 finalists from across the educational sectors Australia-wide providing unique recruitment and promotional opportunities. The annual Textile Institute Southern Australian Section (TISA) design competition is for full time fashion students across Australia. It provides students with the opportunity to participate in an exciting competition that brings together industry partners and potential employees - the future of the TCF industry. TISA is the only professional organisation in the textile and fibre industry that provides the unique opportunity for Australian fashion and textiles students to study overseas at the prestigious Paris American Academy.' On Friday 29th July, the GPT Group officially announced the construction commencement of the David Jones store at Highpoint Shopping Centre. Highpoint showcased work from emerging RMIT fashion talent Georgia Havekotte and Elisa Ferro through a full-scale live fashion shoot that formed the backdrop to the launch. The shoot featured David Jones’ Youth Fashion Ambassador Samantha Harris. Stylist, Philip Boon invited me to discuss my collection from concept through to product execution.

WHY DO WE DECORATE THE BODY? JEWELLERY IS ONE OF THE OLDEST FORMS OF BODY ADORNMENT. THE WORD JEWELLERY IS DERIVED FROM THE WORD JEWEL, FURTHER TRACING LEADS BACK TO THE LATIN WORD "JOCALE", MEANING PLAYTHING. AN ALWAYS EVOLVING ART FORM, CONTEMPORARY JEWELLERY SERVES FOR MORE AN ARTISTIC EXPRESSION. IT IS IMPORTANT HOW THE JEWELLERY COMMUNICATES WITH THE BODY AS IT IS WAY TO CONVEY A WEARERS PERSONAL STATEMENT RATHER THAN THE FLAUNTING OF WEALTH. OFTEN CONTEMPORARY JEWELLERS USE UNCONVENTIONAL MATERIALS TO QUESTION THE MEANING OF ‘VALUE’ THROUGH HUMOUR AND SUBVERSION. JEWELLERY IS ONE OF THE OLDEST FORMS OF BODY ADORNMENT. MANY FORMS OF JEWELLERY HAVE THEIR ROOTS IN FUNCTION, EVOLVING INTO DECORATIVE ITEMS AS THEIR FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENT DIMINISHED AND ART BEGAN TO TAKE PRIMACY OVER FUNCTION AND WEALTH. IT HAS PLAYED MANY ROLES IN HUMAN SOCIETY; RELIGION, CURRENCY, SYMBOLISM, PROTECTION AND ADORNMENT.

THE WORD GEOMETRY IS DERIVED FROM THE WORDS GEO AND METRY MEANING EARTHS MEASURE. THE ANCIENT GREEKS STUDIED GEOMETRY IN RESPONSE TO NATURE FOLLOWING THE SIMPLEST AND MOST EFFICIENT PATH. BY EXPLORING THIS THEY DISCOVERED PROOF OF NATURE’S ELEGANCE AND FIND CLEAR CORRELATION. BETWEEN THESE NATURALLY EXISTING MATHEMATICAL FORMS AND PATTERNS. Development Work for Plaything S/S 2012 Collection

Research into jewellery investigated the legitimacy and limits of the term ‘decorating the body’. The development of plaything focused on the exploration of the 3d form. Inspired by cut diamonds and gemstones, ways to recreate these shapes were explored. The way the garment interacted with the body together with the accompanying jewellery was critical in the development process. Ways to manipulate the fabric to form strong structure was also investigated. It was decided all fabrics used would be black to contrast with the underlining theme of cut gemstones that naturally refract the light through its prism.

Recently I was a successful entrant in the Sheepvention's Young Designers Wool Awards

held in Hamilton, Victoria.

I recieved 1st place in the Menswear category.

Graphica Exhibition- L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival

The Graphica Exhibition showcases emerging RMIT fashion and textile students that have explored innovative techniques through print, weaving, knit, dyeing and embroidery.

The Graphica Exhibition is on from the 16th till the 26th of March at the First Sity Gallery.

This event co-insides with the 2011 L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival.

Julian Roberts is the inventor of a garment pattern cutting method called 'Subtraction Cutting', a technique that focuses on the hollow spaces between the garment and the body.

He is now coming to our shores to share his techniques through workshops across Australia.

The Fashion designer has shown 13 collections at London Fashion Week and is a 5 time winner of the British Fashion Council's 'New Generation Award.

He is an accomplished scholar and teacher with an impressive history of classes, lectures and demonstrations given in the UK and throughout Europe and America. He was awarded a Professorship and set up the new fashion school at the University of Hertfordshire in the UK in 2004.

The Workshops will be held in Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane and Byron Bay.

Workshops are in February but they're filling up fast so hurry. Student Workshop also available.

Recently for my birthday my partner commissioned my favorite jeweler, Natalia Milosz-Piekarska to create this little monster for me. I absolutely love it!

I’ve had many comments about what it reminds people of; a tv, a manga character, a tamagotchi. In any case one of my favorite things to do is to cup it in my hands and day dream.

WE Netherlands invited 2nd year fashion students of Amsterdam Fashion Institute to compete for the WE created by.. Award. A denim collection designed by and targeted at the next generation.
The winning students would design a limited edition collection that would be sold throughout 18 selected WE stores in the Netherlands.

I was selected as one of the winning students, together with Elvert Arnold, Laureen Van Breen, Loes Poot, Patrik Bockhacker and Cedric Huegel, the creators of the brand Kurtwood Scott.

WE offered the winners a production trip to Istanbul, Turkey. I was given the opportunity to experience the ins & outs of production at first hand.

WE was derived from HIJ Mannenmode and ZIJ Damesmode in 1962. In 1999, they chose one international brand name. Nowadays, WE is an international fashion chain with 230 stores for men, women, boys and girls in 6 European countries which is led by a head office in Utrecht.

The winning jeans will feature in WE's Denim Vintage Gallery. Check them out in WE stores from the 22nd of March 2010.
